Derek is a neurosurgery resident at NYU Langone Health. He previously attended the NYU Grossman School of Medicine where he received the Klara and Larry Silverstein Merit Scholarship and was admitted to NYU's Accelerated Three-Year MD Pathway for Neurosurgery. Before medical school, Derek attended Georgia Tech as a Stamps President's Scholar, studying neuroscience and graduating with the highest honors. While there, he conducted memory research and pursued neurodegenerative disease research at the NIH, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Since starting at NYU, Derek has taken on various leadership roles, including President of the NYU Chapter of the Student National Medical Association, Co-President of the NYU Chapter of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and Research Chair of NYU Mission Brain. He also serves as an Admissions Ambassador at NYU, assisting with recruiting and retaining applicants and facilitating multiple mini-interviews.

Derek had a highly successful medical school admissions cycle. After applying to 23 of the nation’s top medical schools, he received 22 interview invitations, attended 18 interviews, and received 17 acceptances. These 17 acceptances include 14 of the top 20 medical schools. He also received total cost of attendance merit scholarships at five top 20 medical schools and received full-tuition merit scholarships at four top 20 medical schools.

As an admissions counselor, Derek is excited to share the knowledge he gained from his own thriving medical school admissions cycle and his experience counseling others. He is confident in providing exceptional guidance in every aspect of the admissions process, including personal statements, secondary essays, activity descriptions, building school lists, interview prep, and exhibiting fit with a school's mission.
